Why I write Haiku

The natural world is wonderous. In a few short lines, during a walk or over a coffee, I can capture an observation or thought about a plant, an animal, a season, the weather, or it may be the landscape I find myself in. I love the challenge of trying to portray this within a confined set structure. It’s like doing a puzzle,. trying to work out how to fit words together to maximise their meaning and imagery.

Haiku is my form of nature journaling

I have set myself a challenge to post a Haiku each week for 1 year (starting August 2026).
Follow my progress on socials and I hope this inspires you to write your own.

Spring Day at Binna Burra is a haiku poem by Australian writer Susan Tilgner.
